It is said to be the city of love and is widely regarded as one of the most romantic places in the world, so if you're visiting Paris, you will surely want to make the most of your stay and book into one of the many fabulous five star Paris hotels available. The Pere-Lachaise cemetery is perhaps the most famous of these and is the final resting place of many famous people from throughout history. Here you'll be able to visit the graves of Oscar Wilde, Honore de Balzac, Bizet, Chopin and Rossini. A walk down the many avenues of tombs and graves is a strangely atmospheric and solemn experience, worthwhile in its own right, but along the way you'll recognize many other famous names such as Edith Piaf, Jim Morrison, Isadora Duncan and Sarah Bernhardt. If a visit here has given you a taste for the slightly macabre, you may also enjoy a trip to the Catacombs, a vast network of underground tunnels, originally Roman limestone quarries that were utilized after the French Revolution to house the remains from destroyed tombs. The Catacombs run extensively under much of Paris and were used as shelters by the French Resistance during World War II. Only a small portion of them is now open to the public and you can see walls of stacked bones and skulls. It may not be to everyone's taste, but a visit here is a unique and eerie experience as well as a reminder of the city's historical heritage.
